One morning on my way to work, I heard a low-fi indie pop track, "Safe and Sound" on WMBR and decided to pick up Marc Anthony Thompson's Black Music. What I got was so much more than low-fi indie pop. Black Music begins with the throwback track "Life" comprising of a shuffling beat, sensual trumpet, and intimate deep voice and goes everywhere from there. It's all here: the hi-fi rock of "Half a Man", crooning R&B of "Don't Look Down", sensitive ballads like "My Mom" and "Hangover Five", and THE perfect driving and reflecting song, "It's All Good". Definitely my best "whim" of 1998; simply brilliant. Kudos: Impossible to fit in any one genre box. |
