boathouses along the schuylkill
29 March 1998
When I was a young girl, my brother taught me how to create a paper boat out of newspaper... out of the colorful comics that arrived with the Sunday paper. He would drive me to Monument Park and we would set sail for exciting destinations... our boat floating atop enchanted waters. How I wished that I could climb upon that boat and sail across the living sea... with nothing but sun in my eyes.
Two weeks ago, when I received your letter, I didn't know where to find the charmed boathouses along the Schuylkill River... and yet today, I sit along them in the solitude of a different Sunday morning, dreaming the childlike dream of jumping into my paper boat and disappearing before your very eyes.
