lois, take one

5 July 2000

I could never sleep the night before the first day of school. Even in college, quarter after quarter, I would lie awake with my stomach churning with the anticipation of new challenges and a fresh start.

Once in middle school, I roamed from room to room at 3:30am, sobbing, until my dad woke up and asked what was wrong. When I told him that I was so very nervous about the year ahead, he told me to lie down on the floor next to where he was sleeping, take deep breaths, and just relax.

Last night, the night before my first day with lois, I slept like a baby. And I can't help but feel that I owe it to the time off. Since March I've been clearing my head of all that was. I've been breathing deep and relaxing and dreaming new dreams.

And that was the fresh start. The clean slate.

The new me.
