One of my favorite cinematic moments comes from The Myth of Fingerprints, where Mia and her mother dig through an old chest in the attic to find a valentine made for Mia by her kindergarten sweetheart, Leonard Morrison.

Mia says, "There's no point to good memories."

Her mother says, "They remind you of who you are, Mia."

And Mia replies, "No, they remind you of who you were."

Today I found my very first love letter among ticket stubs and graduation tassels. Trevor. First grade. He wanted to marry me, but his parents moved to Texas instead.

And though I barely remember his affections, I do remember the bitter sting when he left me behind. And it reminds me that even now I don't appreciate the smallest gifts: the smile of a stranger, the tenderness of a friend.

I framed the letter. To remind me of who I am.
