Do you remember when I brought up Now Music and Fashion on November 20th?

How cool is it that this record shop in Arlington, Virginia based its color scheme on the sleeve of Va Va Voom by Cinerama? It may be my new favorite place in the DC area.

I wouldn't lie.

The walls, infusing royal blues with bottle greens and just-out-of-style oranges, are otherwise covered with show flyers from some of my favorites: Saint Etienne, Aden, True Love Always, and their above-mentioned style mentor, Cinerama. After just a few eye-candy seconds, I am in love.

I carefully flip through their indie section, which seemingly bursts from WMBR-Marianna's collection. The Clientele. Brideshead. Club 8. Titles for which I'd searched every Newbury Comics in New England.

I settle for an old Sub-Pop release from Velocity Girl and an early 23-track Tsunami CD. Like magic, I am invited to listen to both before purchasing.

On my way out the door, I pick up a flyer for an upcoming Charming show at The Black Cat sponsored by the shop. And I can't help but smile inside at my enormous good fortune.

What makes your city feel like home?

Meanwhile, just one teeny-tiny year ago...

31 december 1999
People I know make resolutions. They revel in clean slates, new beginnings, second comings. In the past I could never find the strength or the hope to join them.
But this year's different.
I ducked out of my life a week ago. Cocooned myself in thought. I bought a new coat and a pair of kick-ass boots. My mind is racing with revolution. I jumped through my cartoon hole and where I come out will be a surprise to even me.
But I'll see you there.

After so many years filled with day after day after day, broken promises, and wasted dreams, it's nice to finally look back on a year that burst at the seams with adventure and change and revolution.

In 2000 I quit my job, drove across the United States in my convertible del Sol, cashed in my retirement, secured a new position in the "real" world, bought a new wardrobe, let my hair grow long and curly and wild, redesigned my web site three times, started drinking martinis, the real ones made with gin instead of vodka, straight up, with as many olives as possible, and took my obsession with all-things-political to a whole new level, culminating in boxing up all my earthly possessions and dragging them 500 miles South to Washington DC.

The only thing left to do this year is buy a new sofa.

What's your grand plan for 2001?
